Artefact of the day 4/8

August 5, 2012

Cache of 38 ground slate endblades

The artefact of the day was found by Ilkka Isalo, who was excavating in the charred roof soils of the Yup’ik sod house that we suspect was destroyed in the ‘bow and arrow wars’ around 1650. Ilkka found a cache of 38 ground slate endblades, some finished, others just unsharpened preforms.  Endblades like this were inserted into slots at the end of bone arrow points.  The charred remains of a wood container were found under the cache.  We have found what amounts to a Yup’ik ammo box.
