Artefact of the day 7/8

August 8, 2012

The artefact of the day was found by Edouard (Northlight Heritage) as he worked to define the boundaries of house floors in the southern portion of the excavation block. It is a beautifully carved ivory pendant about 2 centimeters long, with a delicate frame surrounding a surface carved for fastening something decorative that may have been glued into the carved settings. This is a unique object that we haven’t seen before on this site or any other in Alaska.  Along with the pendant we are also recovering labrets, beads and other objects used in personal adornment which in turn is usually associated with social signalling of status and roles within the community.
