Artefact of the day 13/8

August 15, 2012

The artefact of the day is actually a category of artefacts found by Tricia and Ilka in the house floor deposit in the southern house. It is basketry.  This is the first basketry we found at the site, despite the fantastic preservation of organic material. We have braided grass ropes and tied grass mats from this as well as previous years, but this is the first articulated basketry. This twined open work basketry is probably the only prehistoric Yup’ik basketry preserved. The technique is very similar to the grass weaving techniques still in use.
