Artefact of the day 15/8

August 16, 2012

The artefact of the day was found and exposed by Charles and identified as an artefact by Rick (everyone was focused on the grand woven grass mat next too it) in the lowest house floor level in the southern house. It is half a mask made as a stylised face with a pointed head and a sharp v-shaped smile, and it much resembles masks found on Kodiak. Masks were used for ceremonial purposes and had strong spiritual powers. When a mask had served its purpose and was ‘put down’ it was often broken in half or burned to let the spirits out. Linking to this mask, yesterday Sanni found a little maskette in her square, also that with a pointy head and very much resembling the art style on Kodiak. We’re seeing many fascinating parallels with prehistoric Alutiiq cultures, particularly in the area of art and ceremonial culture.
