Artefact of the day 3/8

August 4, 2013

beadAndrius' find of the dayThe artefact of the day is a bead. It was found by Andrius when trowelling down the remaining turf layer in our newly opened southeast block. It is an unusually large bead – over 2 cm long. Although oral history tells us to expect them, beads are a relatively rare find at the Nunalleq site, and this bead is unique in its design. It is made out of read stone and resembles red shale beads found on the Kenai Peninsula. This may indicate long distance trade networks of status items along the Alaskan coastline.
