Artefact of the day 10/8

August 11, 2013

Ella & findThe artefact of the day is an ulu handle. It was found by Ella in the rubbish heap that is area B. Ulu’s are all purpose knifes traditionally used by women. The ulu handles we find at Nunalleq have a particular design – a hole for the thumb to get a better grip. HandleThis however, is not why this specific ulu came to be artefact of the day. Ulu’s are every day objects, and their design is generally quite simple, but this ulu handle is carved in the shape of two animal heads. They migh be bear heads, but we thing that their long snouts, nostrils and little teeth only point to one thing –Palraiyuk!
