Artefact of the day 12/8

August 13, 2013

Chaz & gogglesThe artefact of the day was found by Chaz in the gogglesnorthernmost square of the Area A trench from 2012. It is a pair of snow goggles (Yup’ik sunglasses) made out of wood, used from hunting from the ice and from kayak in the winter, to protect the hunter’s eyes from the bright light reflected in the snow. They are the southernmost goggles in Alaska, and the only ones in an archaeological context although there are many parallels in ethnographic collections. A truly amazing find!
