Artefact(s) of the day 14/8

August 15, 2013

Rick and kayakEdouard and scraperOnce again we have a tie – two artefacts made artefact of the day today. The first one was found by Rick living surface in area A. It is a kayak model carved out of wood. The design reminds of Greenland kayaks, which is interesting as this type is though to have been introduced with the Thule migrations. The second find of the day relates to the first one in a way. It is a gut scraper made out of antler, and was found by Edouard, also in area A. Sea mammal gut were used for making the water proof parkas, light weight and entirely water resistant, essential for kayaking and hunting from the sea and ice in the cold Bering sea.
