Artefact of the day 16/8

August 17, 2013

Carly & owl(s)Owl!

The artefact of the day (and as it happens Charlotta’s all time favourite Nunalleq artefact) is an owl! It was found by Carly in the late house floor deposit of area B. In many cultures around the world owls are thought to be wise creatures with special powers, and in Yup’ik culture owls were special beings with strong spiritual powers. Owls are depicted in effigies like this, in dolls and masks. Additionally masks were often decorated with feathers from snowy owls. Our owl effigy is rather simplistic in its design, but very effective in its message, and somehow moving (as good art often is). In this owl the old Yup’ik artist communicates with us over the centuries.
