Ella & Andrius starting off the fine screening

August 17, 2013

Today we started the water screening process back at the village. Using samples taken from the different contexts at site we have managed to collect the small bones that would otherwise be missed during excavation. To do this we have set up a screening station. We have three different mesh sizes to catch the bones. We then hose down the samples taken at site getting rid of the silt and leaving us with the small fish bones. These are very useful as they tell us where in the living area fish were being consumed as well as in what quantities. We’re going to have two people stay behind each day in order to go through the masses of samples we’re taking – 60 litres per context!
