Artefact of the day 20/8

August 21, 2013

Žygi and his find

The artefact of the day is a throwing board. It was found by Žygi close to the bottom of the cultural deposits in area B. Throwing boards were used to hurl sea mammal darts and bird darts when hunting for a kayak. The technology behind this hunting weapon is to increase the speed and force behind the throw by lengthening the hunters arm. The dart rests in the groove on the board. We have found many of these darts on site. The groove on this board is so thin it might have been used for more slender bird darts, rather than for hunting seal. This is the second throwing board found at Nunalleq, the first one was found by last year, but this one is in better condition.
