Artefact of the day 24/8

August 25, 2013

Lindsey with findThe artefact of the day is a cache of prongs found by Lindsey in the house floor in area – eight prongs together in a bundle. They area made from caribou antler. They were either meant for a leister for spearing fish, or for bird darts. Prongs were positioned both in the front and on pointsthe sides on bird arrows so the arrow would wound the bird even if it didn’t hit it right from the front. The prongs look like they might have been made by the same person, and are probably part of someone’s hunting gear. Prongs like these are an evidence for the mixed subsistence economy of the people living in Nunalleq, made of caribou antler – also a prey – to catch fish.
