Artefact of the day 26/8

August 27, 2013

seal & LindseyExcavation is small scale by now; most people are drawing or backfilling at this point. However, we still have some nice finds coming out of the non-frozen parts of the trench in area A (the non frozen parts of area B, besides being only c. 2 cm deep, only contains fish bones). sealtoggleThe artefact of the day was found by Lindsey above the second layer of house floor in the mid-period (or same-period as it might turn out to be) house in area A. It is a toggle in a seals shape. It has big googly eyes that might have had insets at one point. It is made out of walrus ivory. For unknown reasons it has great many holes, more than what we usually see in toggles.
