Back in Quinhagak!

July 21, 2014

We are back in Quinhagak for another exciting summer field season! Rick has arrived a couple of days ago and has set the wheels in motion, with help from Cheryl, our campsite manager extraordinaire. Warren and the staff of the Qanirtuuq Inc. have been hard at work and welcomed us to a fantastic base camp at the village. By the time Edouard, James, Keith, Jack and I arrived last night, Cheryl had a amazing meal of fresh produce waiting for us, a fully supplied pantry and a carefully designed meal plan for the entire six weeks. Meantime, Rick has been coordinating efforts to prepare the site for the start of the excavation next week. There is still much backfill to be removed, but they are making good progress. As soon as I find the cable to download the photos, we’ll show you the canvas ‘palace’ they built for us out there, which will provide shelter, work place and storage in the field. Another excellent news is that the site seems to have suffered little erosion this winter and we have not lost any of the excavation area. For the last few days, the weather has been glorious – for those of you getting ready to join us, remember that this may not last long and it also means a lot of mosquitoes, so come prepared.

We promise lots of pictures soon – and daily updates from Quinhagak!
