Artefact of the Day 12/9

August 13, 2014

The artefact of the day was found by Zygi when he was digging a section on the erosion edge facing the sea to see if we could find evidence for a tunnel into the house we are excavating (it looks like he may just have found it, which is almost worth a post of its own).  This is a complete model of an angyaq or umiak, which gives us the very first view of what pre-contact Yup’ik open skins boats looked like.  There is a small hole burned into the bow of the model, probably incurred during the attack of the village and subsequent burning of the house around 1640, during the bow and arrow wars.  Now that we are excavating the house floors, the number of spectacular and unique artefacts we are finding are likely to greatly increase over the coming weeks, so stay tuned!
