It’s all about floors and tunnels

August 14, 2014

Quite the contrary to what the weather reports told us last night, this morning we woke up to beautiful blue skies and sunshine.

By afternoon, however, the weather prophesy came true…

But a little rain has never stopped Nunalleq archaeologists. We are making quite good progress at the site, the most part of three different house floors have been taken out, and we are close to the levels where we left the excavation in 2012. We are very excited to be coming down to them, as we will be able to connect the different structures, which hopefully will answer many of the questions we have.

SONY DSCIMG_4432You can see that we’re down in house floor from the abundance of fine finds that were recovered today, such as an amazing woven hanging basket found by Jacqui, a delicate ivory pendant from an earring found by Anna, and a complete Holliday Inn fork found by Zygi and Celeste. Well, truth be told the fork wasn’t found in house floor (luckily enough), but in the turf layer close to a pot hunter’s pit where Zygi and Celeste are opening up a new square  – were we now think we have a tunnel. For those of you that are new to the blog I can tell you that this mystery tunnel have been following us for years – first we thought we found it, but it turned out to be a board walk, then we thought we found it again, but it turned out to be nothing, then we thought we found it under the board walk. which turned out to not be the case – but then late in the season last year Edouard and Rick thought they actually had found a tunnel after all – and now, after cutting a section it still seems to hold up, so maybe, maybe we’ve actually located our illusive tunnel. Fingers x’d. The only way we’ll know to sure is to excavate it – so stay tuned for more tunnel news 😉
