Happy birthday, Rick!

A speechless Rick receiving his birthday gifts
Today was a day of celebration because it was Rick’s birthday (we won’t say how many) and the 6th anniversary of the archaeological discovery of the site! We had a surprise organised for dinner time: a card painted by our own John R. from all the 2015 crew and a special gift from the ELLA project team (including Keith and Kate all the way from Scotland), a walking stick carved by John Smith, who presented it to a rather speechless Rick.

Rick appraising his new walking stick and discussing its properties with John Smith
According to Quinhagak elders, the walking stick is an essential partner when travelling the wilderness because it keeps you from danger and guides you through the safe path. This is a present from us as much as from John, who created a wonderful object especially for the occasion.
And I have to mention Roman’s chocolate and raspberry cake. It was as delicious as it was beautiful!
We have plans to mark the 6th anniversary of the Nunalleq excavations in style, with some special blog posts, so keep tuned in!
Ana
Many happy returns of the day.
