Artefact of the Day 22/7

July 23, 2015

IMG_5247The artefact of the day was found by Sven on the other side of the wall… that is outside the house. It is a netting needle – or shuttle, a tool used for mending nets. Netting needles are still used by all fishermen, although now they are often made of plastic. Netting needles are not specific to the arctic, they are used globally. This is the first netting needle we have found at the site, but we have several examples of net gauges – of different sizes, which reveals the people at Nunalleq were fishing for different species. A common find in shore bound sites are net sinkers, but peculiarly enough we have only found a few at Nualleq. The netting tools however, show that this is not due to the absence of net fishing.

WOW. What a great useful and beautiful tool. Good job finding it.
