Preparing the site

June 29, 2017

Today work at the site begun:

Removing the backfill from our excavation block. When we reach a stopping point at the end of the season we cover the excavation with large tarps followed by plywood, a foot or two of soil and finally blocks of sod. This protects the site but all this backfill must be removed again the following year. Today we cleared the just the western half of the block; these 28 2×2 meter squares will be the focus for the 2017 season.

The hard-working backfill crew; a mix of volunteers and Qanirtuuq Corporation staff from Quinhagak. We were able to clear everything down to the tarps in one long day. Rain and wind kept us cool and bug free while we worked.
