First Day Digging

July 2, 2017

July 1st, and the first day excavating. A small but determined crew reacquainted itself with the site, except for Richard who saw it for the first time. And of course, the site greeted him with a partial mask. A very hopeful start of the season 🙂

Richard Barnes, just arrived from the Museum of the Aleutians in Unalaska, excavating a mask fragment.

Stylistically this mask looks a lot like those from Kodiak Island, underscoring the common cultural origins of the Yup’ik and Sugpiaq peoples.

And this mask fragment gets the title of Artefact of the day (even though this author was more thrilled by the wedge with a ravens foot and feather decoration. If you keep your eyes on the blog it might feature in a later post. But for now we say goodnight. We are all knackered from jetlag and a full days work at the site. Goodnight!)

Maybe the other half of the mask will show up? Hopefully. So nice to hear about this new season and your discoveries. Thanks!
