Floors, boards and cuts…

July 13, 2017

The further down (further back in time) we get in the excavation trench, the more interesting it gets. We are quite surprised to see that these old floor layers are large and very well perserved. We expected them to be disturbed by the later occupations, but this does not seem to be the case. Today we have found cuts – post holes, storage pits, mystery pits and cuts for floor boards. All these cuts give us an insight in past construction procedures. It is clear that cuts were dug to place floor boards for floors and boardwalks. It is a pattern we see repeated again and again. Some mysteries remain to be solved, but this is just as it should be in an archaeological excavation 🙂

The well preserved house floors also treat us to many amazing artefact finds.

The high level of preservation is also keeping other treasures for us; we have found an abundance of coprolites – poop in plain english. Mostly dog we think. Disgusting as it may sound, these nuggets contain a lot of information on diet, deceases, parasites…

Scientifically significant poo

Hahahahah – dog poop – full of scientific information. What a precious doll head Joni found. And the basket Ana found! Can’t wait to see what else you find down under the floors. A real treat to observe your progress. Thanks for sharing.
