Grey skies and happy archaeologists

July 15, 2017

Finally some rain! It might seem a strange thing to say, but a little shower this morning made the site all pretty again, made the colour changes in the soil noticeable again, and moisturised the wooden artefacts that have been drying out in the fine weather. Overcast is just better for archaeology…

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAToday we were finally ready to go down the drain…. and Richard and Ana made some great discoveries in the fill.

Richard with doll – maybe a shaman?

We have also started to remove some walls, or rather extension of the walls – probably a later addition or renovation, as we have old house floors going under them.

Today Rick also found the nicest (the only nice?) lamp of the season. For some reason the Nunalleq lamps are very unimpressive. Especially in comparison with all the other carefully crafted art objects and tools the crudeness of the lamps is surprising.

Fine weave basket – made of spruce roots?

The rain made us all huddle in the tent for lunch…
