Artefact of the day 26 July

July 27, 2017

The artefact of the day was found by Véro at the bottom of a wall extension at the edge of the  main room. It is a large head – possibly a dolls head. It is painted with red ochre and has a deterrent look. Maybe it is the house protector or guardian.

The head is the right size for the half sized masks we have found in at the site. Interestingly the Russian Naval officer Lavrenty Zagoskin, who wrote about his explorations of Alaska in the first half of the 19th century, mentions witnessing a ceremony where large size dolls wearing masks were part of the celebration. It seems like we may have found such a doll.
