Artefact of the day August 3

August 4, 2017

The artefact of the day was found by… Anna (no surprise there) in a not-at-all-house-floor context in the southern part of the trench. This has been outside the house for the three occupation periods already excavated, but now we think we are coming down to a surface that was actually inside. Thus, the house seem to have been bigger in its earliest stage.

The artefact of today is a mystery solver. It is a type of artefact of unsure function. We have found sticks like this before, and Rick thought it might be a snare pin based on similar artefacts from Kodiak. However, Elders have suggested it might be a netting needle.

Now, Anna’s find has the baleen wrapping still preserved – hence a snare pin!

Tune in tomorrow to see what other mysteries we will solve 🙂

I think it’s game piece. Game is called kaapuckaq sp?. It’s game where throw it in a certain way and try to land it sticking into the ground.
