Artefact of the Day July 24

July 25, 2018

The artefact of the day is an amber bead. It is a rare find at the site, and amber was a rare commodity in Native Alaska, and amber was a valuable trade item. We have found amber beads in previous seasons, but none of this size. It is about a cm long.

This bead was found by Rick when he was excavating a large looters pit that has been dug through the cultural deposits in the ‘new block’. The looters pit can be dated to the 90’s thanks to drinks cans. There’s also advertisements for the ‘new’ Willy Wonka movie, and marlboro light cigarette buts. However, the looters missed the bead.

That is quite beautiful and so glad the looters missed it and you found it. Congrats on such a wonderful find.

is there a way to determine where the bead or amber came from? This whole project is amazing and fascinating.
