Artefact of the Day July 25

July 26, 2018

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThe artefact of the day was found by Amanda in one of the last (earliest) house floors on the site. This part of the site is constantly wet, which makes it hard to dig and hard to see, but Amanda has persevered and managed to make sense of it in the end. We think this particular artefact, which was found amongst a jumble of logs. planks and grass, might have hung from a shelf like structure by the wall. It is a lamp holder for a hanging lamp – made out of grass. It is made out of a woven grass wreath and three strands of woven grass rope. It was used for suspending a clay oil lamp from the rafters of a sod house. This is the second such grass lamp holder recovered from the site, both in near perfect condition.
