Finishing up…
Second to last day at site. The atmosphere is quiet and focused. We just need to finish – get it down to natural or the first generation of walls, and we’re getting there. Yesterday the last few postholes and cuts were excavated in the ‘old’ trench.
A small corner of house floor remains to be removed, and then we can all move to the ‘new block’ and finish that too.

Despite being on ‘the last’ of everything, we still have some nice artefact finds. Anna found a second (for this season) grass lamp holder for a hanging lamp – very well preserved – at the bottom of a pit.
Daniele found a mask fragment painted with red ochre, quite similar in expression to the painted head we found last year.
Alice found a bowl in a cut on a wall where we expected nothing
– and spectacularly, Rick found a doll giving birth!?!
Finds were also made outside of site. Mike came by and showed us a mammoth tusk he had found on the beach.
So – all is well that ends well. Now we’re heading out for or last day excavating the site. Wish us luck!
